Nick Edsforth was a record setting All Star soccer player for Greenwich High School who led his team to two straight appearances in the Section II playoffs. In his junior year 2004 when he played striker, Nick was the team’s all time leader single season scorer. That year Nick was named a Capital District Section II All Star as well as a Wasaren League All-Star. In his senior year, Nick, a gifted passer, sacrificed some scoring opportunities for the sake of the team when he was shifted to center midfield. In 2005 as playmaker, Nick led the team in assists and was their second highest goal scorer. That year Nick’s team won both the Adirondack Kickoff Classic and a preseason tournament at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta. Again he received honors as an all Waswarren League and a Section II All-Star. He also played in 2004-2005 for the Albany area Olympic Development Club team, and after graduating high school he played briefly for a club team in England.
Nick Edsforth died suddenly on September 5, 2009 from an accidental drug overdose. To remember Nick and to support youth substance abuse education and awareness, the Village of Greenwich is sponsoring a “Kicks for Nick” soccer tournament as part of this year’s Whipple City Celebration.
